I am no longer running from my inner wearer of the bear shirt. "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" you ask. Allow me to answer your question with one of my own: What English word comes from the Norse for "bear shirt?" If you know, you can skip the next sentence. If you don't, that word is "berserk."

When I first arrived here, I believed that for such as me to try to run with the like-spawned beasts we call "other people" was like a bear to try to run with salmon. Shortly, I realized that to be a stupid and overwrought sentiment. Now I think it's more like someone who is lactose-intolerant trying to eat a hunk of cheese. Oh, it is possible - maybe even pleasurable, in the moment - but it always ends the same way: In gut cramps, dry heaves, and the terrible inner realization that that just was not and never will be a good idea.

I once glibly said, "It is the light inside of me that casts the shadows which others perceive as darkness." Bullshit. The light does cast shadows, but without the light, the darkness would remain, as heady and as velvet-soft as ever.
